A paradox: David Pollack had a very wide circle of friends and yet was a lonely person. His kindnesses were many, his devotion to his work deep, his sense of urgency about the environment strong. Many knew of his weak heart but it was a weakness that didn't seem to fit the man, and so news of his death came as a great shock. In those areas where he moved and shook, he will not be replaced however badly people like him are needed. Bob Bliss
