David was unique! As such he represented Oxford well, with his mixture of kindness, quirkiness and creativity. He was a great networker without ever being obvious about it. And he was very honest and very generous. His portrait should have been included in Elgar's Enigma Variations - he was the sort of chap who would have gotten to know Elgar had he been around at the time! He was so quiet, it will amaze everyone how much they miss him! Except perhaps his students - I've never met a student who took his classes who didn't like him or think that his courses were super cool. But few people recognized his profound sensitivity. A very gentle activist who should have died hereafter. Elisabeth Price
