Ben de Foy mentioned in an email that David was a "enigma" to him, and that seemed to me a very apt description. David was clearly very talented, and touched many lives for the better, and we will all miss him. If he didn't manage to fulfill his potential for success in terms that the world recognizes, it was for the most part because of his struggle with severe depression, which he kept largely hidden. Although many of us share this affliction, we are poor at recognizing it in others. In spite of his problems he enriched our lives, and his loss leaves us bereft.
